Application of Antioxidants in Polymers

Why should antioxidants be used?

Application of antioxidants in polymers

Almost all polymer materials are susceptible to oxidative degradation. Degradation leads to discoloration and deterioration in surface properties and, more seriously, loss in mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation, etc. These lead to a reduction in the lifetime and usefulness of the polymer. Antioxidants are used in polymeric materials both for processing and for long-term stabilization to prevent degradation of the material. They are usually efficient even at low concentrations.

Properties of the ideal antioxidants

To maximize the value of antioxidant in polymer, it should have the following properties.

  • High antioxidant capacity.
  • Good compatibility with resins.
  • Good processing function, no evaporation or partitioning at the processing temperature of polymers.
  • Good extraction resistance, insoluble in water and oil.
  • Preferably colourless or light-coloured.
  • Non-toxic or low toxicity.
  • Low prices.

In fact, no single antioxidant can fully satisfy the above conditions. Therefore, antioxidants are usually used in combination to produce a synergistic effect.

Applications

Antioxidants are widely used in polymers such as rubber, plastics, and adhesives to prevent polymeric materials from losing their strength and toughness due to oxidative degradation. Since there are many types of antioxidants, special care should be taken when selecting them. The following shows several common antioxidants and their application areas (more products can be searched on our website).

Antioxidant 1010 (CAS No.: 6683-19-8): It is an antioxidant with high thermal stability and can extend the service life of products. It is widely used in polypropylene resin. In addition, it can also be used for most other resins. The general addition amount is not more than 0.5%.

Antioxidant 1076 (CAS No.: 2082-79-3): It can be used as an antioxidant for resins such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide, poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS), and acrylic. It has the characteristics of good anti-oxidation, small volatility and washing resistance. The general dosage is not more than 0.5%. It can be used as an auxiliary for forming food packaging materials.

Antioxidant 168 (CAS No.: 31570-04-4): It is non-toxic and has good compatibility with resin. It has the characteristics of low volatility, non-pollution, and non-discoloration. It can effectively prevent thermal degradation of polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene, etc.) in the extrusion and injection process, so that the polymers maintain their original mechanical and aging resistance properties.

Antioxidant CA (CAS No.: 1843-03-4): It is a phenolic antioxidant with no pollution, low toxicity, and good heat resistance stability. It can be used in polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, ABS, and polyamide resins. The general dosage does not exceed 0.5%.

Antioxidant DLTP (CAS No.: 123-28-4): It is widely used in polypropylene, polyethylene, ABS resin, and rubber processing lubricating grease. It can change the heat resistance and oxygen resistance of the products. The general dosage is 0.05%-1.5%.
