Behenamide Antiblocking Agents

Description

Behenamide, also known as docosanamide or behenic acid amide (C22:0), is a saturated long-chain fatty acid amide widely used as a functional additive in polymer processing. As a non-ionic surfactant-type agent, it exhibits excellent compatibility with a variety of resins and plays a crucial role in enhancing film performance, improving processability, and ensuring product quality.

Mechanism of Action

Behenamide functions primarily through controlled surface migration within polymer matrices. During film extrusion or molding, the additive diffuses gradually from the bulk polymer to the surface. Once at the surface, it forms a thin, lubricating molecular layer with a lower surface energy than the base resin.

This surface layer delivers several key effects:

  • Slip Effect – The lubricating film reduces the coefficient of friction (COF) between polymer surfaces, allowing films to glide smoothly during winding, packaging, and handling.
  • Antiblocking Effect – By creating a micro-thin barrier, Behenamide prevents direct polymer-to-polymer contact, thereby reducing blocking and enabling easy separation of stacked or rolled films.
  • Mould Release and Lubrication – In engineering plastics such as PA6 and PA66, the amide layer reduces adhesion at the mould–polymer interface, improving demoulding efficiency and protecting surface finish.
  • Secondary Antistatic Action – The polar amide groups attract trace moisture, which can dissipate static charges to a limited extent, reducing electrostatic issues during processing.

Applications

Behenamide is widely utilized across film and plastic applications:

  • Polyolefin Films (BOPP, PP, CPP, LLDPE, LDPE, EVA): It acts as an efficient slip and antiblocking agent, improving handling, processing, and packaging performance.
  • PE Bubble Bags and PVC Calendered Films: It provides slip, gloss, and anti-adhesion benefits, enhancing both appearance and functionality.
  • Engineering Plastics (PA6, PA66): It serves as a demoulding and slip agent, improving release during injection moulding and extrusion while maintaining mechanical integrity.

Storage and Handling

  • Non-hazardous and safe to handle.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, protected from sunlight and moisture during storage and transportation.
